Why Nonprofit Work Matters to Me

Years ago, a speaker at a marketing event challenged the creatives in the room to find ways to give back. It stuck with me. Since then, I’ve made nonprofit work a standing part of my practice — offered at reduced rates so mission-driven organizations can stretch limited budgets further without sacrificing quality.

A decade in, I’ll be honest about what I’ve learned: this work has given me far more than I’ve given to it. Every nonprofit project connects me with people doing genuinely hard, important work, and reminds me why I do this in the first place. Wings of Hope is exactly that kind of project.

About Wings of Hope

Wings of Hope Family Crisis Services supports people affected by domestic violence across Stillwater and the surrounding Oklahoma counties — Payne, Lincoln, Logan, Noble, and Pawnee. They provide shelter, resources, education, and healing when people need it most. For an organization like this, a website isn’t a brochure; it’s often the first, quietest step someone takes toward getting help. It had to be built with that responsibility in mind.

The Approach

The site needed to do several difficult things at once: reach survivors in crisis, inform the loved ones trying to help them, and invite the community to give and get involved — all while being calm, clear, and safe to use.

Trauma-informed, survivor-centered design. Every choice served the people using the site under real stress: a prominent 24-hour helpline, a quick-exit “Leave Site Quickly” option, plain and compassionate language, and clear paths to the right resource without friction or overwhelm.

Built to inform and connect. Clear routes to services, education, types of abuse, and ways to get help — so that whether a visitor is a survivor, a concerned family member, or a future volunteer, they find what they need fast.

Built to sustain the mission. Prominent, respectful donation calls to action and community-engagement paths, plus a spotlight on their Stillwater thrift store, The Thrifty Butterfly, which funds their work.

WordPress, built to be found. Fully responsive across desktop and mobile, with an SEO foundation so the people searching for these resources can actually reach them.

The Result

Wings of Hope launched a website that reflects the care and professionalism of the organization behind it — one built to raise awareness, connect more people with life-changing support, and open new doors for community engagement. It’s the kind of ripple effect that makes nonprofit work worth it: help one organization, and the impact reaches everyone they serve.
